What is a Dermatologist?
A dermatologist is a physician who specializes in skin and its properties of health and disease. Dermatology on the other hand, is a branch of medicine that is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the skin.
These days, there are several dermatologists within the country and across the globe. It therefore becomes hard if not tricky to find the right dermatologist that will not only identify your skin problems but also treat the condition effectively. In order to find such a dermatologist, you have to take into consideration some things.
The first thing you have to consider in a dermatologist is whether he or she is board certified. Board certified dermatologists are dermatologists that have sat and passed the board exam of dermatologists. If your preferred dermatologist is not board certified, then you are taking a big risk. Certified dermatologists are always knowledgeable and competent in their practice as they normally undergo an additional training in dermatology before sitting for the board exams. If therefore goes without saying that such dermatologists are not just competent but also skilled in the treatment of skin, hair, nails, skin surgery and more.
Secondly, make sure that the dermatologist you with to approach for treatment has office accommodating hours. He or she should be easy to book and appointment with. Make sure that he or has both weekday and weekend appointments available. It is common knowledge that nearly all doctors are busy. But ask yourself, how quickly can the dermatologist I wish to approach for treatment be seen if I have an emergency? If the dermatologist is too busy for minor appointments, make sure that you always seek your appointments on time. It is better to wait for long for a competent dermatologist than to have an incompetent dermatologist who you can always see whenever you want to.
Thirdly, ensure that your dermatologist can accept your insurance. If he or she cannot, then make sure that he or she charges reasonable fees for cosmetic procedures, anti-aging treatments and laser hair removals. The dermatologist should be able to help you cut down on costs by working with you on payments and prescription of generic drugs. Acne treatments should not worry at all as they are usually covered by insurance.
Lastly ensure that you feel free and comfortable with your dermatologist. He should be able to answer your question in a professional but friendly and understandable way. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable with a dermatologist, then take time to find a dermatologist you are free and comfortable with. Doctor patient relationship is always very important. Then ensure that your dermatologist does not rush during your appointment. This may lead to you the patient, misunderstanding prescribed treatments and preventive measures. With a good dermatologist, this should not worry you as you will feel free to let him or her know what is unclear. You will also feel free to air voice your concerns and disclose everything about your health issues.
