Sebaceous Glands and Acne
Sebaceous glands are glands that secret sebum which is meant for lubricating hair and skin. Sebum is a mixture of fats and debris of dead fat- producing cells. The combination hinders dry, cracking and itchy skin. It also improves ones skin health. Sebaceous glands are located near the skin follicles where they synthesize a good amount of fatty acids but with less or no effects.
The oil produced protects the skin from bacteria and other foreign substances which can cause harm to the body. However when the amount of oil in the body is excess, the pores will be blocked causing emergence of white and black heads.
When sebum is produced in excess, it may cause such skin disorders as acne, comedones, seborrhea, milia and rosacea. These disorders are very common in people between the ages of 13 and 20. Enlarged sebaceous glands are very difficult to treat since it involves very strong medication with severe side effects.
Generally, an overactive sebaceous gland is more than trouble in the skin; this is due to high fat diet, poor hygiene and stress after having an intense activity, its signs include; white heads, black heads and oily skin. These can be avoided by reducing amount of fats in the diet and improving hygiene.
Yet again, there can be underactive glands, which occurs when there is low production of sebum; it is also a nuisance to the body especially when its effects become intense. It is characterized by dry skin, flaky and sensitive skin. It can also cause the skin to be sensitive to whether, especially hot whether.
These disorders change the appearance of the skin hence causing discomfort, since they appear on the neck, shoulders, chest and also the face. In order to put up with these, there are some precautions involved in sebaceous glands treatment. These include the following;
First of all, the skin should always be kept clean; especially the parts are prone to bacteria. A clean skin is free from bacteria which can cause skin irritation and acne. Secondly, one must avoid using products or rather make ups that are comedogenic. They cause more harm than good to the skin
In addition, the skin should not be exposed to sunlight for a long time. It should always be kept dry, free from excess moisture. Applying make ups to the skin is recommended, but one should ensure that the make ups are not harmful to the skin. If you have to use make ups then ensure that you know your skin type very well. If you cannot do without them, then uses make ups that are rich in sacrylic acid.
Finally, it is always very important for you to seek urgent medical attention if your condition fails to respond to treatment. You should also avoid mixing more than one type of treatment for your condition. If you are in doubt about anything, do not take chances. Consult your doctor or dermatologist as soon as you can.
