Acne Myths

Acne is the most common type of skin condition that affects about 90 percent of the population at some point in their life. It appears at an early age, usually in the teen years. Sometimes it disappears during adulthood but some adults are also adversely affected with the condition. The condition is often misunderstood and it has psychological effects on many who suffer from it. There are also plenty of acne myths that cause concern and embarrassment for those who suffer from it.
Some people believe that acne is a benign disease that does not require treatment. They believe it is something that you will just “grow out of”. While this may be true to an extent, there are plenty of problems that can be encountered in the meantime. If left untreated the acne can become severe enough to cause permanent scarring of the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back. Scarring of the face is the most cause for emotional concern.
Another acne myth is the fact that people feel it is a teenage disease. While this is true, it can also carry over into adulthood. During the teen years the body produces more of the oil called sebum. This is the oil that collects in the hair follicles to form the acne. As you get older the production of sebum tends to decrease for most people. Hormonal changes in adults also reduce acne episodes but there is no guarantee that adults will not continue to have severe acne breakouts. Breakouts are most often seen in people ages 12 to 25 but severe cases can be seen in people as old as 45.
For years it was believed that certain foods contributed to acne breakouts. People used to believe that foods like chocolate, milk, fried foods, and sweets caused excessive acne breakouts but that is not considered to be one of the many acne myths. Dermatologist now believe that acne is a disease that is common in teenagers and those who suffer from excessive sebum production. Medical professionals now believe that proper acne treatment is better than trying to limit the diet to restricted foods. There are some medications that contribute to acne such as birth control pills that cause hormonal fluctuations.
Acne myths also include a three day cure. Acne cannot be cured in three days; however you may be able to reduce the severity in three days with proper treatment. Prolonged treatment is needed to keep acne under control. There does not seem to be any one single cure but daily treatment is recommended to keep the condition under control until the person outgrows the condition.
Some people also believe that acne treatments are dangerous and harmful to the skin. While some products that contain chemicals may increase the skin irritation, natural products that are gentle to the skin can be a very good tool for treatment. In all cases it is best to avoid acne if at all possible. Starting in the teen years with a daily natural treatment can help prevent an acne breakout and keep the skin clear. Daily cleansing with a mild soap and water will also help keep the oils washed away and prevent them from forming inside of the hair follicles.
