It must be remembered that the corporations that create over-the-counter acne treatments do so in order to assume a favorable profit margin. Those companies do not have the permanent well-being of you, the consumer, in mind. They intend for you to continue purchasing their products indefinitely. While their products may provide short-term relief, they are not supreme answers to the greater problem at hand. With that understood, it is helpful to know that there are natural alternative methods that are capable of impeding the advancement of acne. You don’t have to look much further than the corners of your own home in order to attain the relief from acne that you have long sought.

One of the difficulties that an acne sufferer faces is the need to balance the oil content of the skin. While having oily skin will cause acne to worsen, over-drying the skin will cause the skin to produce an emergency supply of oil, and start the process anew. This is the over-arching challenge  one must face in the war against acne.

Olive oil, one of the most venerated skin treatments in human history, is a commonly found product that can help to achieve this balance. Jeanne Calment, the oldest human being on record, partly credited her longevity to a daily rubbing of olive oil. Apart from helping to restore the balance of oil in the skin, olive oil contains antioxidants that can help the skin heal to a more natural and beautiful state.

Receiving a few minutes per day of Sunlight is also beneficial. The Sun provides a direct form of Vitamin D that the body absorbs more readily than from pills. But, as with anything else, this should be observed in moderation; too much Sun will dry out the skin, and, perhaps, lead to other health problems that have worse implications than acne.

Obviously, good hygiene is mandatory in restricting the growth of acne. You should wash your face daily with warm water. It is also helpful to make sure that facial hair is kept at a minimum, and that hair is pulled away from your face, as it contains oil that could cause breakouts. Avoid using hand soap or body wash on the face at all costs, as they will severely over-dry the skin.

You should also maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water per day and performing regular intensive exercise will greatly influence your body’s ability to fight acne. Consuming foods high in antioxidants, such as blueberries and spinach, will help the body against the spread of free radicals. The immune system will function at a higher level and, thus, it will more efficiently be able to ward off unwanted agents (acne included). You can’t expect to look beautiful on the outside if you don’t take care of the inside. Ultimately, if one should pursue a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle (physical as well as mental), the effects of acne will be greatly diminished.
